In the world of football, Frank Leahy was as important as Beethoven to music, Shakespeare to dramatic poetry, Michelangelo to sculpture. Greatness was not thrust upon Frank. He achieved it through hard work and determination. But, first, he had to have the makings. From those makings, he was capable of going to town. By applying his formula for success, nothing could have kept him from achieving the heights he reached. The life story of Notre Dame football coach, Frank Leahy, is one of fiery inspiration, humor, and unwavering determination. From the family farm, to one of Knute Rockne's fighting Irish, to head football coach at the golden dome, Leahy's philosophy and antics, both on and off the field, illustrate a model for greatness and the fantastic stuff of legends.

An unauthorized biography of Notre Dame football coach Frank Leahy. The author purports to have been a close friend of Leahy and in 1971 conducted a number of lengthy interviews with the coach, large portions of which he claims to have recorded. The issue I have with the book is that it reads more like a fictional account than a biography. The dialogs are basic and, while sometimes interesting, don’t give a lot of insight into this great man. Could he have really recited the score of every game in season after season twenty years later? The volume asserts it examines Leahy’s character and philosophy, but I found the information to be rather superficial. It's okay, but a little disappointing.Product details

Iron Desire The Legacy of Notre Dame Football Coach Frank Leahy K Raven Rozier BJ Williams 9780557091980 Books Reviews
I was expecting a more detailed biography full of research. What I got was conversations with the coach written like they were hanging out at the neighborhood bar. Not my kind of biography. The only reason I gave it two stars is that I am a graduate of Notre Dame and I couldn't bring myself to giving it anything lower.
Does not limit the scope of the book to football. The value of competition is not limited to sports but has a definite impact on a persons entire life.
I collect Notre Dame football books as well as other Notre Dame football stuff and this was an edition to my collection
Good read if your a football fan, and if your a Notre Dame fan that much better. Good look and Coaches life.
For a young boy growing up with a mother who followed the Fighting Irish by listening to the games on the radio and turning the game off toward the end if the game was too close, I really enjoyed reading about a coach from my early radio days listening part time to the Fighting Irish.
Having read Talking Irish and Leahy's Lads it was enjoyable to read about Leahy's life after football. He will always be remembered as a coach who set lofty goals and did whatever it took to achieve. The author was well intensioned to give a look at the coach from another viewpoint then the over focused coach. Leahy sought perfection and is no different than the typical coach today.
For those who follow the Irish today it is enjoyable to look back at a period in our history when it was great to sit around the kitchen table and picture in your mind a group of dedicated players and a well dressed coach trying to make the fans feel good on Saturday and for the rest of the week.
